In May 2012, my wife and I enjoyed a week-long hiking holiday on Elba. Organised by Surprise Reisen and very competently led by Achim Gäckle, some 25 people of varying ages travelled by coach and ferry and stayed in the very beautifully located Hotel Viticcio on the north coast.
Each day the coach took us to a different staring point and we explored the different parts of the island, trekking along ridges with fantastic views, trudging up steep ancient paths maunting through long-abandoned terraced slopes. See a few impression here.
With my non-existant Italian, I searched the few bookshops I found for a historical novel in English about the island. Since there only seemed to be books about the Napoleonic era, which didn’t interest me much, the crazy idea germinated in me to write one myself. So here goes!
